BRAVE is led by young women, and trains girls and young women from underserved communities to tell their own stories through journalism and photography/film, acquire practical skills, and build networks among their own peers and with adults. It is through these efforts that they are able to access education, health care, economic empowerment, self-confidence, and safety. The primary goal is to create safe spaces for underserved young women ages 10-19 so they can become educated, resilient, and engaged female leaders in their communities, schools, and own lives. CTAOP’s two grants support the expansion of BRAVE’s workshops for young women in secondary school and their transition to being fully youth-led as the founder and Executive Director steps back into a supporting role.
Why it’s innovative: This is the first venture into supporting an organization’s transition to being youth-led. The organization uses the expertise and experience of young women to drive action and programming. The workshops themselves are also youth-driven and aim to create a supportive environment for girls and young women from one of the most dangerous townships in South Africa to thrive and grow into leaders.
